Smoke-Free Mecklenburg is a local grassroots coalition of health care
professionals, advocacy groups and individuals committed to bringing smoke-free
restaurants, bars and workplaces to Mecklenburg County.
After years of hard work, Smoke Free Mecklenburg volunteers and people all
across North Carolina can finally breathe a sigh of relief. On May 19th,
2009, we made history when Governor Beverly Perdue signed into law a bill which
will prohibit smoking in all restaurants and bars across North Carolina.
Although the new law will not protect all workers from secondhand smoke
exposure, it is a tremendous accomplishment and has made a strong statement
across the country in support of smoke-free air regulations, particularly in
tobacco growing states.
