Tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death in North Carolina. One in every five deaths in North Carolina is attributable to cigarette smoking! (NC SCHS/CDC)

  • Annual health care costs in North Carolina directly caused by smoking: $1.92 billion.

  • Portion of smoking-related health care costs paid for by the state Medicaid program: $600 million.

  • State and federal tax burden from smoking: $498 per household.

  • Smoking-attributable productivity losses in North Carolina: $2.82 billion.

  • Employer cost per smoker per year in increased health care costs over nonsmoking employees: $1,429.

  • Cost of a $500,000 life insurance policy for a 30-year-old nonsmoker: $425. Cost for the same policy for a smoker: $935!
